COMPRESSION STOCKING THERAPY

WHAT IS COMPRESSION THERAPY?

Compression therapy is the use of medical grade stockings to help improve circulation in the legs. Poor circulation in the veins causes symptoms such as:

  • Swelling in legs and feet
  • Varicose veins
  • Spider veins
  • Tired aching and fatigued legs and feet

This happens because the veins are not effectively moving the blood back from the legs up to the heart. Problems in the valves in the veins allow blood to flow backwards and pool in the vein resulting in bulging, dicoloured varicose veins. While extremely common, varicose veins are actually a sign of serious circulatory problems and should not be ignored.

HOW DO COMPRESSION STOCKINGS WORK?

Compression stockings are socks and hosiery that improve circulation to help control swelling and relieve tired achy legs.

  • Delivers a controlled amount of pressure to the legs
  • Supports the venous and lymphatic system, and prevents poor circulation
  • Promotes better venous blood flow, which in turn helps to prevent and control vein-related diseases

Gradient compression stockings have a greater compression at the ankle and less at the knee to improve the flow of blood and fluid from the ankles and feet upwards and back toward the heart.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FIT, MEASUREMENT AND CORRECT GRADE

Compression hosiery is a therapy that requires precision. Buying compression hose without proper assessment, measurement and sizing will reduce the benefits of the hosiery and in some cases, can make vein issues worse. Dr. Bahar is a Certified Compression Therapy Fitter and combines a full assessment with specific recommendations for compression grade and fit to ensure the best possible outcome.

INSURANCE COVERAGE & COST

The cost of compression stockings varies depending on the amount of compression and the type of sock or stocking. They are usually covered by most extended health insurance plans which frequently allow for multiple pairs per year. We invite you to bring your insurance information to our office so that we can assist you in determining and verifying your coverage.
