Portable TENS machine for summertime aches and pains

After weathering the long Canadian winter, most of us leap into summertime activities with both feet. That’s why it is during the summer months that people are most likely to suffer from muscle related aches and pains. Your regular chiropractic care prevents injuries by keeping your spine in optimal alignment and your improved posture helps you to be more effective and efficient in playing your favorite sports, but if you are also suffering from muscle soreness as a result of your activities, a home base TENS Machine may be the solution for you.

What is a TENS Machine?

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It is a form of electrical stimulation therapy designed to reduce pain. Electrical impulses, sent through electrodes (sticky patches placed on the skin), are used to stimulate the nerve endings near the pain site which creates a tingling and massaging sensation. This relaxes the muscles and also causes the release of endorphins (pain relieving chemicals that occur naturally in the body), further enhancing the pain reducing effects of the TENS machine. Portable TENS machines are safe to use, small, easy to operate and offer an excellent alternative to drug therapy in dealing with pain. Although they can be costly, fortunately they are covered by many work health insurance plans. Because they are available for use at home, they provide regular people with access to a pain relieving, drug free therapy at their own convenience.

Can I just buy one and use it on my own?

Yes and no – while portable TENS machines are designed for home use, it is advisable for you to have your doctor examine you and show you where to place the electrodes, demonstrate how the machine works and also prescribe the duration and frequency that are best for dealing with your particular pain issue. While they are extremely safe there are some health conditions that make using a TENS machine inadvisable such as individuals with cancer, pacemakers, pregnancy or epilepsy. I am happy to let my patients know that included with the purchase of any TENS machine from any of our offices is a full assessment and instruction session. This ensures that you are using the unit safely, correctly and that you will get the greatest benefit.
